Regeneration is the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit that gives spiritual life to a person who is spiritually dead, producing the new birth Jesus describes in John 3. In Reformed theology, regeneration precedes and enables saving faith, since a dead sinner cannot believe until God first makes them alive. It is monergistic, entirely God's work, not a cooperative human achievement.
